Your Auto Detailing Business

Three Tips when Starting Your Own Auto Detailing Business

Starting your own auto detailing business can seem like an overwhelming task, however, if done properly, it can be a very rewarding investment. What follows are some key points to consider for the process:

1. Have a business plan
Even solo operations benefit greatly from a little forethought. Some basic questions to consider include:

  • What is your market? Who is your business going to target and how are you going to get to them? What services are you going to provide to them? Who is your competition and what are they doing to attract customers? Will you be selling auto detailing supplies or just providing detailing services?
  • What kind of financing will you need? What are your costs? Will you need to apply for a loan? Will you need to pay royalties? How will you organize your financing? Will you need an accountant?
  • Who will perform your daily business operations? Will you hire extra help? Will you need to hire managers? How will company profits be dispersed or invested?

By answering these questions, you'll have a great start to your business plan. When drafting up your official plan, you can find many examples of these sorts of plans online and at your local bookstore. Putting a plan to paper is important not only to focus your goals and expectations, but being able to apply loans of a specific amount and being able to describe how you will use the money.

2. Organize your Necessities
After you have determined what products/services you want offer, putting the rest together will be the easy part!

  • Legal: Be sure to look into the sorts of business licenses, registrations, permits and other operational (legal) necessities. These differ from place to place, but your State Department generally will have most of the information, forms and applications.

  • Auto detailing equipment: Will you be a completely mobile detailer or will you work with local car wash, car rental, body shops or other businesses? If you are planning on going completely mobile, you will need some extra items. The first item you will need is a mobile detailing trailer. This trailer comes with necessities such as water reserves, water reclamation systems, extra tanks and hoses. You will also need to make sure that your trailer has a full supply of soaps, extractors, waxes and towels. An eco friendly option for mobile detailers is to use a waterless car wash. This will remove the need for water supply and reclamation systems. You can accomplish the job with the waterless wash, a microfiber towel, and a degreaser for stubborn dirt and grime.

  • Financial: Look into getting a business checking account (and possibly a credit card) at your local bank. Also, you may want to consider software to track business purchases, payroll, expenses and (of course) income.

3.Re-evaluate Your Auto Detailing Business Plan
When you have been open and operating for a few months, it's very important to re-evaluate your business plan. How close are you sticking to your plan? Are there things you didn't consider when you first created it? What sorts of improvements can you make to your plan? Does your business model need to change?

Considering these things will keep your auto detailing business moving forward and profitable.
